Sudden Bilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss Following Postpartum Hemorrhage: A Case Report
Authors
Abstract:
AbstractThe prevalence of bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is less than 5% and the etiology of most cases is unknown. Due to many structural and functional similarities between the kidney and inner ear, many conditions, diseases, and drugs have both renal and cochlear effects and toxicities. There are several reports of SSNHL in patients with CRF, uraemic patient, hemodialysis treatment, and ARF. Here, we report a rare manifestation of SSNHL following severe postpartum hemorrhage that has simultaneous renal failure and cochlear impairment. The patient was a 22-year-old primigravida woman with term pregnancy who after delivery and episiotomy hematoma and postpartum hemorrhage subsequently suffered from kidney failure, oliguria, and SSNHL that occurred after 3 days of delivery. In conditions such as severe postpartum bleeding leading to acute renal involvement, the possibility of simultaneous involvement of cochlea due to hypoxia or received drugs should be considered.

BACKGROUND Hearing loss is an infrequently-reported consequence of recreational drug abuse. Although there are sporadic reports of hearing loss from heroin and cocaine ingested separately, there are no reports of hearing loss resulting from the combination of both drugs ingested simultaneously in the form of speedballing. PURPOSE The purpose of this report is to document a case of bilateral s...
full textSudden Bilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss Secondary to Cerebral Venous Thrombosis
Introduction: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is an important otological emergency. Up to 90% of the cases are idiopathic. Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is an extremely rare identifiable cause as it only represents 0.5% of all strokes. Case Report: In this paper, an unusual case of bilateral SSNHL secondary to bilateral CVT with rapid and complete recovery is reported. The patie...

Introduction: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a frightening and frustrating symptom for the patient as well as the physician. Prognosis is affected by multiple factors including duration of hearing loss, presence of associated vertigo and tinnitus, and co-morbidities such as hypertension and diabetes. Materials and Methods: Forty subjects presenting to our department with feature...
full textStudying VEMP in Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Introduction: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) has a prevalence of 10 in 100,000. Viral infections, vascular obstruction and rupture of the intracochlear membranes are supposed to be its most common etiologies. About 40% of patients experience vertigo or imbalance. The VEMP (vestibular evoked myogenic potentials) test is a known approach for detailed study of the labyrinth. The advant...
